BMW M54 engines were equipped with one of two accessory drive belt tensioner designs:
- Mechanical tensioner
- Hydraulic tensioner
Both designs are interchangeable, but they use different mounting hardware and components. If you're replacing one style with the other, be sure to use the correct hardware for the tensioner type being installed.
The hydraulic tensioner is the newer design and is generally considered the preferred replacement. If your vehicle is currently equipped with a mechanical tensioner, we offer conversion kits that include the components needed to upgrade to the hydraulic style.
Tip: Before ordering replacement parts, verify which tensioner style is currently installed on your vehicle, as both designs were used on M54-powered models.
